Post 55 American Legion

Harry B. Doremus

This is the original Harry B. Doremus American Legion Post 55 Building built in 1934, located on American Legion Drive (which is apparently named to honor those men who served in World War I). The Harry B. Doremus Post 55 American Legion Hall was the Carl Padovano Educational building up until the late 1970's. It is located on the street, across from Hackensack High School Gym Field and Tennis Courts.  John Stalone the Hackensack Head Wrestling Coach in the spring of 2009, noticed that construction workers were ready to take down the building.  He called me and said, "Bob we should save the sign or something; it just does not seem right not to save something from a building that meant so much to people years ago."  Unknown to us, we went to the building the next day, and they were taking it down that moment.  We took down the sign and after these photos were taken, the building you see in the photo was gone.  The building was renamed the Carl Padovano Educational center in the 1970's when the American Legion sold the building to the city and that is the sign you see me holding.  The building has been rebuilt and it still has his name and honors Carl Padovano and the service he gave to his country and the community of Hackensack .

To those who fought in World War I, that building was their Memorial to Harry B. Doremus who lead Company G and many North Jersey young men into battle in the Great War and died while doing so.
Let us never forget the Soldiers Sacrifice.
